‘Transforming’ Texas education again? Didn’t we do that

a few times already?

 It sounds really good, doesn’t it? We need a transformation in Texas schools, “one that fosters innovation, creativity and a thirst for learning with new, more meaningful, assessment and accountability measures, rather than a system built around narrowly focused standardized tests that end up as the ‘be-all, end-all’ yardstick for a school’s success.”

We’re all in favor of improving our public education system, after all. We want students who are smart, engaged, thirsty to attack knowledge. We want to be able to look at what is going on in our schools and be able to say, “We’re doing this right.”

The above phrase comes from transformtexas.org, an organization run by the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA). Interestingly enough, it’s almost the same language I saw used back in the mid-1990s, when the Texas Education Agency, TASA and other leaders of the education bureaucracy were promoting the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills.

For those who can’t read education-ese very well, it translates into four simple English words: “Send us more money.”

You’ll be happy to note that this idea of transforming Texas education was crafted by a select group of superintendents from across the state, gathered in “facilitated meetings” (meaning the Delphi Technique was employed). Not a single non-educator parent was involved in making this decision, no school board was consulted, the State Board of Education took no vote on it.

Kind of like how CSCOPE was developed, and we’ve seen how well that works, right?

(By the way, remember the big hullabaloo about “getting rid of CSCOPE” this spring? More than 70 percent of Texas school districts are still using it.)

Texas education has been getting “transformed” since at least the mid-1970s. Looking back, I recognize the elements of Transformational Outcomes-Based Education being implemented in my junior year in high school … and mine was a rather conservative school district. I can only imagine it started much earlier in others.

The problem is, since the beginning of the era of “transforming education,” it’s never been transformed. A few new educational fads sneak in with each “transformation,” but the basic methodology — and, more importantly, the results of that transformation — never changes. We jack up spending on public education and get two new layers of administraors, and our kids get dumber.

Here’s a trick for you parents out there with kids in junior high or high school: ask them how to spell the word “there.” There’s a 90-percent likelihood they’ll rattle out a quick answer, and it will be correct — but they’ll never ask you whether you’re asking them to spell the word “there” (that place), “they’re” (they are) or “their” (belonging to them). The word “two,” also spelled three different ways, can generate a similar response.

That’s because spelling isn’t important in an outcomes-based system. It’s irrelevant “because we have computers to correct that now.” People know what you mean, anyway.

Therein lies the problem with an outcomes-based education: it doesn’t really educate. It’s not designed to. It’s designed to ensure perpetual high-paying employment for the education establishment.

Consider the radical changes made in American public education between the 1950s — when the U.S. education system was the best in the world, hands-down — and now, when we’re in the second echelon.

Prior to the late 1960s, most American kids left the first grade able to read almost anything in the English language; they might not understand it all, but they could pronounce the words. That’s because they were taught using old-fashioned phonics — they were taught the correlation between letters and combinations of letters  and the sounds those letters made.

Phonics was taught systematically: a lot of drills and skills and memorization. It was, at times, boring — but it worked.

Once a student learned how to read, then you could focus on developing comprehension. I recall doing exactly that in the second, third and fourth grades — becoming a voracious reader and sometimes tackling material way over my head (Dostoyevsky’s “Crime and Punishment,” anyone?).

When American schools began “transforming” starting in 1968 with the creation of a federal Department of Education, all that stopped. Literacy moved into the affective (values and feelings) realm through a false methodology called Whole Language.

The idea of Whole Language is that humans learn to read the same way they learn to speak — by watching others. Instead of looking at letters and combinations of letters and reasoning what the sounds of those letters should be, students have to learn to memorize entire words — “sight words,” the idea is called — which become increasingly familiar to read as they see the same words more often.

That is why so many of today’s kids struggle to read “at grade level”— it’s hard to comprehend a word you haven’t committed to memory when you have no idea how it’s pronounced. Being able to read a passage was never a problem for those of us brought up in that old system.

The education bureaucracy has learned, and we now have “balanced literacy” — an attempt to inject a little phonics in \to what is still essentially a Whole Language environment.  The upshot of that is it is now easier for schools to identify kids with learning disabilities such as dyslexia, get those kids labeled — and get the extra money for them.

When you hear the word “transform” used in conjunction with public education, you can bet a very expensive process is about to begin. And you can bet you won’t get a say in that process.

You will read in the following News Release from TASB stating their agenda to pursue their liberal agenda despite Gov Perry’s Veto of HB 2824 which was sponsored “Bennet Ratliff”, whose brother Thomas Ratliff serves on the State Board of Education illegally.

TEXAS Taxpayers Fund Their Own DEMISE!

The saying goes “Follow the Money” to find the corruption as goes with Texas Education. Texas taxpayers are funding their own DEMISE through their local school districts. How you might ask? School superintendents are paying membership dues for themselves as well as other administrators  to join the progressive liberal non-governmental entities, Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) . These two groups lobby the Texas legislature to write and pass policy in hopes of promoting  their progressive agenda. TASA & TASB are just a few blocks away from the Texas Capitol making the job of lobbying convenient during the legislative session.

Why would school districts be funding lobbying groups? Texas school administrators not only vote and pay the funds to TASA and TASB but they also make up the governing board of these two organizations. SERIOUSLY? It appears to be to be a conflict of interest and unethical for school officials to fund and govern the same organization with Tax Payer funds.

Not only do Texas taxpayers fund ISD membership fees but they also pay for administrators to attend TASA & TASB conferences and pay their hotel and food bills as well. TASA is an off shoot of the national group American Association of School Administrators (AASA). This past February AASA held a conference in California where Humanist Linda Darling Hammond was the key speaker. Hammond is associated with Communist Bill Ayers, the Weather Underground Bomber. Texas Taxpayers paid for various ISD administrators to attend this conference as well.

Please contact your state reps and ask them to look into this mismanagement of taxpayer money.

Texas Association of School Administrators Support a Progressive Education

Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA)  which is funded with your tax dollars through you local school district is behind a progressive global education for all Texas Students. TASA holds conferences throughout the year with various break out sessions speaking on different topics. This years TASA/TASB conference had a sessions where Global Encounter presented their progressive curriculum/learning technique. Here is the powerpoint slide show they presented. Most Texas schools  are moving to a un-vetted online learning with the use of laptops/ipads, with the help and influence of TASA/TASB.  They are working on removing textbooks and creating a learning where the teacher is nothing more than a facilitator. Absolute truth is not taught and students create their own learning. American Exceptionalism will become a thing of the past. CSCOPE was setting the foundation for Project Based Learning that is why numerous school district despite the controversy of lesson are holding on the “management” system of CSCOPE. To Pray or Not to Pray?

I have been warning you about the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and their agenda of Transforming the Texas Education System. School Administrators across the state of Texas are spending millions of tax dollars that could be utilized to hire teachers or help students but instead they are funding this  liberal/progressive organization. It is imperative that YOU (children or no children in the school district) get involved  and find out the amount of money your district is spending on TASA and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB).

 CSCOPE, unfortunately laid the foundation for project based learning (PBL) in our Texas schools. TASA now has lessons on I TUNES to help teachers further implement PBL.  The first I Tune lesson I read is titled “A  Question of Faith” which was developed with The Learning Network of the New York Times. (YIKES). The lesson is out of the High School Government course and instructs students to discuss and ultimately decide individually and collectively if prayer should be aloud at an upcoming school event. They also are to engage in other questioning which put students on the spot as to their faith and beliefs.

Texas Superintendents…..$$$$ and more $$

Texas progressive liberal superintendents are working over time to transform the Texas Education System They have been laying the foundation for this Education Transformation with a Marxist/Progressive teaching philosophy called Project Based Learning (PBL). Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) & Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) which are funded with your TAX DOLLARS through membership fees and conferences, contribute to this transformation. Why are taxpayers having to pay membership fees and conference expenses to fund these progressive liberal organizations that are contributing to the demise of our children and country with a leftist progressive ideology that does not cherish America’s Heritage and views Communism in a positive light? We have seen this with the CSCOPE lessons where they had Texas students drawing a new Communist flag.

The 2012 TASA/TASB Conference was held last Sept. I am not sure what the fee was for last years conference but if the cost is near what they are charging for the 2013 TASA/TASB conference this September taxpayers need to be speaking out.   This is the attendee list of those who attended the 2012 TASA/TASB conference. Check out the number of individuals that have attended from your school district. Why are taxpayers having to pay for their registration fees along with meals and hotel expenses? OUTRAGEOUS! There is nothing about this conference that is truly going to benefit students

OBAMA & TEXAS EDUCATION TRANSFORMATION

No one loves a happy ending more than me. Today was a personal once-in-a-lifetime movie moment: I welcomed President Obama to Manor New Technology High School. Before the president spent 45 minutes with students showing off Project Based Learning, I got to engage in a conversation with him about the kind of innovation taking place in 100+ public school districts across New Tech Network.

 

It was no accident that Manor was selected for its transformative educational methods and focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). The faculty and founding principal Steve Zipkes epitomize the persistence, vision and creativity needed to re-imagine a high school that truly prepares learners to be the innovators of tomorrow. They did not achieve this remarkable success on their own or overnight.

At New Tech schools, we have found a way to close the achievement gap regardless of whether students reside in urban, suburban, rural or underserved areas. Our 2013 Student Outcomes Report offers compelling evidence that the vision we have to transform schools within public school districts is being realized.

The President said about Manor New Tech, “Every day this school is proving that every child has the potential to learn the real-world skills they need to succeed in college and beyond. You’re doing things a little differently around here than a lot of high schools, and it’s working.” He went on to say: “We also have to make sure we help every student get the skills like they do here at Manor New Tech to compete in a high tech economy.”

Back to my fervent hope for a happy ending. The President today called again for support for the $300 Million High School Redesign he proposed in the State of the Union speech. He also reiterated that he wants to see universal access to quality public pre-school and to make college more affordable. For my happy ending to come true, three things have to happen. Congress and the White House have to agree on the best ways to invest in education innovation. State policy-makers and the business communities around this country have to come together to provide financial and material support in K-12 education innovation. And school district leaders need to move from asking, “should we innovate?” to “how do we find the funds to invest in innovation”? Should all three of these things happen, I will get my wish. And children everywhere will be able to experience the kind of education that enables them to thrive in ways we can’t even imagine.

As President Obama said today, “Every young person in America deserves a world-class education.”

I wholeheartedly agree. Let’s do this and do it now.

Obama Austin Tech Tour Raises Democrat Profile in Texas

President Barack Obama urged lawmakers to approve more federal spending for technology education, training and jobs, holding up the Austin, Texas, area’s economic boom as an example for the rest of the country.

The Texas visit today was one of a series of events across the country that the administration says are meant to build pressure on Congress to adopt economic ideas laid out in Obama’s State of the Union address this year.

“We’re poised for a time of progress, if we’re willing to seize it,” Obama said in an address to executives and workers at Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT), which makes products for the semiconductor, display panel and solar industries worldwide.

Obama met with students, local residents, investors and entrepreneurs as he made his way across the city. He announced competitions for three manufacturing innovation centers and an executive order requiring government data to be released in a form that entrepreneurs and researchers can use to generate applications and new services.

Obama blamed political posturing in Congress for blocking his proposals, which he said would foster research that benefits technology companies and help train workers for those industries.

Obama told company workers that when they talk to their elected officials, “You’ve got to remind them, we don’t want government to do everything for us but it’s got a role to play” on infrastructure and research funding.

Addressing a group of “angel investors” during an earlier stop at an incubator for technology startups, Obama said government can play a “beneficial” role in helping the private sector spur job creation.

He said he was concerned about the impact of the automatic, across-the-board federal spending cuts known as sequestration. The cuts are “effectively freezing basic research” spending over the next one to two years.

“We could end up losing our edge” to economic competitors in Asia, he said.

Obama said Austin is an example of the kind of cooperation between government and business that can foster innovation.

The metropolitan area centered by the state capital, which has about 820,600 residents, had a March jobless rate of 5.3 percent, compared with 7.6 percent nationwide. Computer manufacturer Dell Inc. (DELL) is based in nearby Round Rock, and Apple Inc. (AAPL) has announced plans to double the size of its 3,500-employee customer-support center in Austin over the next decade.

“I’ve come to listen and learn and highlight some of the good work that’s being done,” Obama said at Manor New Technology High School in the Austin suburb of East Manor, where he inspected solar and robotic projects developed by students. “Folks around here are doing something right.”

Education Secretary Arne Duncan in 2010 cited the school as boosting opportunities for low-income and minority youth. Of the school’s 341 students last year, 46 percent were economically disadvantaged, 48 percent were Latino, 25 percent were white and 21 percent were black, according to data provided by the school district.

WARNING: PROJECT BASED LEARNING

It became apparent to me that CSCOPE was part of a bigger problem and would lay a foundation for Project Based Learning (PBL). PBL is based on the teaching philosphy of Marxist Lev Vygotsky and Progressive educator John Dewey. The Texas Education Service Centers, Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) are running full speed ahead to implement PBL  Parents and Taxpayers need to be very concerned about PBL. Here is a comparison between a Traditional Education and Project Based Learning,  The comparison is the same as traditional vs CSCOPE.

TASA and its “joined-at-the-hip organization” TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) use our tax dollars to hire lobbyists to go to Austin to lobby us for higher school taxes. (School districts also use our tax dollars to pay for school board members’ TASB expenses.) In essence, we taxpayers are paying to lobby ourselves!

Why should TASA/TASB live off our tax dollars?  Classroom teachers have to pay for their  own teacher organization dues and conventions if they choose to participate.  If administrators and school board members want to join TASA/TASB, that should be entirely up to them; but the Texas Legislature needs to pass a bill during this legislative session that requires public school administrators and school boards to participate in TASA/TASB by using their own personal dollars and not by using our taxpayers’ dollars.

The Days of Trusting Your School Administrators is OVER!!!

Tax payers across the state are mostly unaware that thousands of dollars are being paid to two liberal organizations, Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) and Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) with their school taxes. TASA and TASB or just two organizations that promote a liberal ideology through the Texas Education System. Your school district uses your tax money to fund and pay their administrators and the school board membership fees (they decide who and how many) will be members. WHY?  TASA and TASB hold conferences on a yearly basis and your tax money again is used to pay all attendee’s expenses (tickets, hotel, food) for the conference. The more entrenched superintendents or school boards are within TASA & TASB, should raise a red flag to parents and tax payers. TASA and TASB’s main offices  are two blocks away from the TEXAS Capitol making is convenient for their staff to lobby legislatures for  policies that benefit them. As they did with SB 6 from the 2011 legislative session that gave school districts their “instructional allotment” funds to use on any curriculum they choose without oversight.

The owners of CSCOPE is the non profit group, TEXAS EDUCATION SERVICE CENTER CURRICULUM COLLABORATIVE (TESCCC), which are made of the directors of the 20 Texas Education Service Centers.  TESCCC have operated under secrecy for the last 7 years. How you may ask? 1) They had teachers sign a non disclosure statement under duress without attorney approval, stating that they would not release the contents of CSCOPE or say anything negative about it. 2) No text books (in many schools). 3) No Homework.

Despite the fact that CSCOPE controls the teachers with the administration’s  intimidating walk throughs of classrooms and the taking of photos, and the fact controversial material is being taught to students you still have administrators showing their liberal side in promoting CSCOPE’s continued use.

We have seen lessons, asking students to draw new communist flags, The Boston Tea party being a terrorist act, Paul Revere was hiding drugs in his house, web links that led students to learn about the sex lives of Islamic women, lessons asking the teacher to hand out verses of the Quran to students, students were tested on Sharia Law, etc, etc, etc….. The following superintendents are still out promoting this progressive indoctrination, stating it is just a couple of lesson excerpts that have caused the controversy. Quite the Contrary! Where is all the money located from the sale of CSCOPE?  Why is it still hidden from the public. Why are parents pulling their children out of school to home school them or place them in private schools? Why are teachers quitting (especially our veteran teachers)?

 It is sometimes mindboggling how some controversies begin. Certainly, the wildfire that has swept across Texas concerning the CSCOPE curriculum has our heads spinning. Misinformation has spread rampantly and the truth backed by factual information has been difficult to get out in front of the folks that are taking small excerpts and lessons out of context. In some cases, the CSCOPE curriculum has been attacked with reckless, unsubstantiated accusations.

The shame is that CSCOPE should be a success story of how 870 public school districts, average enrollment of 2000 students, working together with the twenty Education Service Centers (ESCs) created a 21st century curriculum based on the state mandated Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Prior to selecting this curriculum for CISD, an extensive investigation was conducted to assure that it was a good fit for our district.

 

CSCOPE curriculum/lesson plans were created by master “Texas” teachers, not a textbook company, not a testing company, and not a private, for-profit vendor. Multiple resources, including digital resources, were integrated into the curriculum, with suggested lessons that proved to be extremely beneficial to less experienced teachers. The framework allowed districts and staff to integrate localized lessons within the scope and sequence of the system. Approximately 50% of the charter schools (i.e. KIPP Academy, UT Charter School, Bannockburn Christian Academy and the Texas School for the Deaf) also use CSCOPE. Private schools, such as Catholic Diocese of Austin, Wichita Christian, Hyde Park Baptist and Cornerstone Christian Academy use CSCOPE.

What is my point? CSCOPE and our ESCs have been accused of promoting non-Christian and unpatriotic values based on a couple of lessons that were taken out of context, the targeted lessons were based on state standards created and approved by the State Board of Education. Due to several districts refusing to purchase another “new” curriculum, the creators of this “new curriculum” began a mass media blitz misrepresenting two lessons that addressed the state required curriculum standards.

Districts are mandated to teach the major religions of the worlds and the beliefs of those religions. Districts are mandated to teach heroism and terrorism. CSCOPE curriculum units have designed lessons that explore these standards, allowing students to investigate, compare/contrast, and analyze perspectives based on cultural influences. Example, the Boston Tea Party was perceived as an act of heroism from an American’s point of view; however, patriots of England considered this an act of terrorism. Islam, one of the major religions of the world, believes their God is the only God. These are the two excerpts taken out of context of the instructional units that have resulted in mass social media messages from those wanting to sell “their curriculum”, accusing the writers of CSCOPE and the ESCs of treason and promoting the Islam religion! Recently, a superintendent received threatening emails because the district was using CSCOPE.

Carthage ISD was not one of the first districts to embrace the curriculum; however, the revised state standards and new state assessment system demanded a new curriculum. CSCOPE offers a well-designed curriculum framework that is vertically aligned to the state standards (NOT the Federal Core Standards as inaccurately reported), the state assessment system and 21st century life-long learning goals.

CSCOPE insures the appropriate skills are taught in specific grades using multiple resources. The instructional focus is college and career readiness at all levels. School districts have the flexibility of using the curriculum as a sole source or as an alignment framework – CSCOPE lessons/units optional. Skills such as spelling, cursive handwriting, and math facts are found aligned in CSCOPE. Teachers have the flexibility to adjust the amount of time spent practicing these skills.

CSCOPE is a learning curve for classroom instruction. It is not driven by one textbook or worksheets. It embraces multiple resources, integration of technology and higher order thinking skills.

Similar to purchased curriculum there are mistakes within the lessons, those are reported and corrected. An internal system exists where teachers are asked for input on any element of CSCOPE. It is a proprietary curriculum and shares the same protection as other vendors’ products one must purchase to access the content. Districts sign affidavits, comparable to those required by the state for STAAR testing, to protect the integrity of the system, not unlike copyright laws. The cost is based on the enrollment of the district.

Parents can view the content of a lesson at a parent meeting; however, giving parents free access to the lesson plans and tests would destroy the validity of the assessments and negatively impact the intent of the instructional lessons.

The attack against the supporters and users of CSCOPE may well become the first step toward the state assuming total control of all curriculum and lesson plans for all districts. A bill has been filed to begin this process. That would be another attack on local control by the state.

Dr. Stan Hartzler quit his teaching job in Luling ISD this last fall, posed the following questions to superintendents who support CSCOPE? 

If the program is as good as these superintendents claim, produced with the supposed expertise, then – –

·        Why is so much essential content missing from the first-year algebra program, and why are there so many errors and poor lessons therein?

·        Why is there a destructive gulf between the lessons and the exams at all levels and in all courses?
·        With nothing of value to protect, why were teachers required to sign a gag order?
·        Why are these superintendents responding only to the well-publicized indoctrination efforts, when there are many other well-publicized problems with CSCOPE?
·        Why are these superintendents failing to defend the upside-down development strategy used by all CSCOPE writers?
·        Why are these superintendents characterizing a grassroots response to CSCOPE’s attack on our children, teachers, and state-mandated curriculum evaluation system, as “wildfire”, “misinformation..spread rampantly”, when the wide-ranging problems with CSCOPE have been backed with factual information?
·        Why don’t these superintendents distinguish between lesson-level CSCOPE, where teachers’ hands are completely tied, and CSCOPE used as originally intended – – supplements used as teachers see fit?

I can only pray for our children’s future with Administrators like this. Parents and Communities need to wake up!

After removing my children in their elementary years from the public/govt controlled school system, I unfortunately was no longer involved in the political process when it came to issues involving  education. That all changed after watching this shocking documentary  and finding out about the Marxist Curriculum in Texas Schools called CSCOPE. I rented a local room and showed the film to community members to inform them as the indoctrination taking place in their local schools. I have found CSCOPE lessons asking students to draw a new communist flag and found a CSCOPE lesson asking the teacher to hand out verses of the Quran to students.

The days of trusting your superintendents who are controlled by the left organization TEXAS ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS (TASA) paid with your tax dollars are OVER! School board members after elected by the public become a trustee of the school district and are not accountable to those that elected them until the next election. The seem to serve the  superintendent who for the most part cannot be trusted with protecting your child from Marxist indoctrination, if you look at all the school districts in Texas that have purchased and implemented it. Texas Association of School Boards is another leftest organization that millions if not billions of taxpayers money is funding and controlling your local school boards.

WHO IS MARY ANN WHITEKER?

PRO MARXIST educator Mary Ann Whiteker is the Superintendent of Hudson ISD in East Texas. Ms. Whiteker is also the legislative chair for left leaning group Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) that taxpayers fund through their local school districts

. Ms. Whitaker spoke at the Save Texas School Rally this past February in support of pursuing what else…”MORE MONEY” for schools.

Ms. Whiteker is a staunch supporter of the Marxist Curriculum CSCOPE that her school district has purchased and implemented. Why are our school superintendents content to indoctrinate your children?

Educators attempt their education intimidating techniques using stating that  CSCOPE provides a SCOPE and SEQUENCE, CRITICAL THINKING SKILLS, 21st Century Learning, RIGOR, RIGOR, RIGOR (I am sick of that word).

 

Ms. Whiteker released the following article scolding private citizens across the state of Texas who are concerned that their school district has purchased and implemented  a Marxist, Pro Islamic, Pro Communist, Anti Christian Curriculum.

Superintendents across the state are not doing their jobs in protecting your children when they fail to acknowledge what CSCOPE is and stop it’s implementation. What exactly are they profiting from this leaves one to wonder?

Ms. Whiteker is one such superintendent who is  pursuing her own liberal agenda and not putting your children first.

Whiteker’s writeup hinges on a common logical fallacy:

“begging the question,” i.e. “assuming the premise one is trying to prove.”

Whiteker takes for granted the following assumptions, and provides no factual evidence in support of these assumptions:

-Critics of CSCOPE are trying to sell their own curriculum (slander/libel – she should be careful with this assertion).

-Critics of CSCOPE are basing their argument on two lessons, taken out of context.

-CSCOPE is needed because of new state standards, and older curriculum approaches were not adequate. (Says Whiteker. What about successful schools doing well on STAAR who do not use CSCOPE?)

-Private schools using CSCOPE (in part – KIPP does not use lesson plans) means that CSCOPE is a good product.

-Forcing CSCOPE to submit to state oversight will end with the state assuming “total control of all curriculum.” (The state has always had “total control” of textbook and instructional material OVERSIGHT – until 2011.)

-Critics have said that CSCOPE uses common core curriculum. (Critics–unless ignorant–have never said CSCOPE used common core, only that the federal DOE was interested in purchasing and that CSCOPE’s methodology and clear philosophical bent was comparable and indeed similar to common core.)

The Irving ISD School Board voted 4 – 3 to censure board member Steven Jones on 4.1.13 (#1 Dallas Morning News posted below). Not only does Steven Jones want to replace bilingual education with English immersion (“works every time it’s been tried”), but he also has been outspoken about his opposition to CSCOPE which costs Irving ISD at least $260,000 per year and has not raised students’ STAAR/End-of-Course test scores.

According to the 3.10.13 article (#3 news article posted below), “…Irving’s students fell far behind the state average last year on STAAR [School Year 2011-12], the state’s new standardized test that CSCOPE was supposed to prepare them for…”

It sounds to me as if the Irving ISD administration does not like Steven Jones questioning its choice of poor curriculum such as CSCOPE (#4 Dallas Morning News article posted below). Irving ISD has been using CSCOPE at least since Sept. 2011. Grassroots citizens through filing Public Information Requests found that over the last two school years, Irving ISD has paid TASA (Texas Association of School Administrators) and TASB (Texas Association of School Boards) $905,028 (2.13.13 —http://educationviews.org/irving-isd-wasteful-spending-by-texas-school-district/ ) These were taxpayers’ dollars. Just think how many classroom teachers’ jobs could have been financed by that $905,028. No wonder Steven Jones is questioning the Irving ISD expenditures!

…Steven Jones listened to the accusations with no visible emotion. He had acknowledged making the phone calls, but he said the emails distorted their innocent and legitimate intent.

When it was his turn to speak, Jones looked out at the packed audience and decried “these attempts to assassinate my character.”

He said the district had spent $23,000 in legal fees “trying to find ways to throw me off the board.”

Jones, who has been on the board since 2011, seemed no more concerned about the prospect of public condemnation than he had last week when the vote was called. He had correctly predicted the way the trustees would vote.

Monday’s vote may be one of the school board’s last major acts before its politics are transformed.

Two of the trustees who voted for censure Monday — Huffstetler and Christian — are stepping down after the May election. A third, Craig, is up for re-election.

Jones is backing candidates in all three races. One of them is running unopposed and is expected to give Jones’ allies a majority.

“We will have a conservative majority on this board beginning May 20,” Jones told the crowd before the vote. “The new board will focus like a laser beam on student achievement. Our focus will no longer be PR and spin…”

Steven Jones has done the unthinkable. As a member of the Irving school board, he has challenged the status quo, questioning wasteful spending and the district’s fixation with bilingual education.

…His first crime was his decision to run for the Irving board of trustees. School board members are not supposed to be conservative businesspeople who have designs on change. They are supposed to be former teachers or liberal activists who will bow to the whims of the school superintendent.

Jones’ second crime was that he won. And get a load of his platform. During the campaign, he said, “I am running for the Irving school board because I have watched the actions of the current board and question its judgment on three major items.”

…But Jones dared question the board when it voted to extend the superintendent an additional 36-month contract after just seven months on the job. The board said it wanted “stability.” Jones wanted “excellence.” He also noted that while no teachers were being hired, the board was openly searching for two more assistant superintendents. He thought the district needed fewer bureaucrats and more teachers.

His biggest crime of all, though, related to education’s biggest sacred cow: bilingual education.

Back in 2011, WFAA-TV’s Gary Reaves did a story about then-candidate Jones’ desire to add an English immersion program to the bilingual mandate required by the state.

…Jones’ additional crimes include “micromanaging” duties reserved by law for the superintendent; explaining to a new assistant superintendent that her job was “wasteful” and might be eliminated; and explaining to the district’s “director of world languages” that the board wanted to push for that English immersion plan.

…A board member who is a conservative, who questions stupid and costly decisions made by the board and actually attempts to represent the interests of children, parents and taxpayers instead of just the education establishment? …Jones’ real crime is his opposition to bilingual education.

In a district where 70 percent of the children are Spanish speakers, you simply do not speak of such things as English immersion — even if it does work every time it’s been tried…

Irving ISD paid $265,000 (per year) for CSCOPE. Did it raise their students’ STAAR/EOC’s? According to this article, “And for all those efforts, Irving’s students fell far behind the state average last year on STAAR, the state’s new standardized test that CSCOPE was supposed to prepare them for.”

Some Texas legislators are trying to do away with the STAAR/End-of-Course tests at each grade level (Grades 3 – 11). These tests serve as a measuring stick, a yardstick, a ruler. If we lose the “measuring stick,” how would parents and the public ever prove whether regular public schools, charter schools, CSCOPE, Turkish Gulen Harmony Charter Schools, dual-credit courses, Texas Virtual Academy, online learning, Advanced Placement courses, International Baccalaureate programs, Web 2.0 Tools, and Safari Montage are actually pulling up our children or dumbing them down?

School board elections are coming up on May 11, 2013, in many towns and cities throughout Texas. In Irving ISD, these elections will evidently settle whether or not CSCOPE will be removed from the District.

My hope is that numerous schools will take the money they have wasted on CSCOPE and use it to purchase the new English / Language Arts / Reading textbooks that are totally aligned with the new curriculum standards adopted in May 2008. These textbooks contain the systematic teaching of phonemic awareness/decoding skills (phonics), grammar, usage, spelling, composition – all of the back-to-the-basics skills that must be learned by students to help them to be successful in the rest of their school subjects, on the STAAR/End-of-Course tests, and in life.

…The teacher, who asked for anonymity to protect his job, said educators were promised CSCOPE would prepare students for STAAR.

“It simply didn’t happen,” he said.

Instead, the teacher said, he wasted hours photocopying CSCOPE handouts no better than the material in the textbook — some of it worse. He said if his principal walked by the classroom and saw him using the book, or deviating at all from CSCOPE material, he would be “redirected” back to the new program.

…Trustees’ complaints about CSCOPE go beyond classroom flexibility. Jones said the program had Marxist origins and appeared designed to “do an end run” around the Texas Board of Education and adopt federal curriculum the state has rejected.

At board meetings, he and trustees Larry Stipes and Gail Conder Wells have claimed that CSCOPE lessons indoctrinate students into Islam and socialism. A state Senate hearing in January heard similar complaints from other districts.

“Nobody knows what’s in CSCOPE,” Jones said. “It’s very secretive.”

In an effort to settle the matter, the district is preparing a teacher survey on CSCOPE. But even that has turned political, with Jones, Stipes and Wells complaining staff won’t include their questions…

Grant Wiggins, one of eight designers of curriculum, standards and instruction of the pro-communist Texas CSCOPE curriculum, also provides professional development to aid educators in implementing the national Common Core State Standards. Pearson, the education service company widely known for publishing textbooks, has partnered with the Council of Chief State School Officers in providing training and other resources to states implementing Common Core.

Pearson is the company who helps create, prints, and scores the Texas State STAAR tests. This company also publishes booklets to help students study for the STAAR tests. These should be good booklets since Pearson knows exactly what is on the STAAR tests. UUM! Do you think this might be a conflict of interest? No more than Pat Hardy, State Board of Education member who reviews the STAAR tests and promotes CSCOPE, stating that the CSCOPE assessments and STAAR tests are similar in type. Comment by Janice 

Through the ‘Pearson Common Core Institute’, Wiggins provides instruction via several Pearson Common Core webinar videos. In one such webinar, Wiggins discusses “how issues of backward transfer relate to the Common Core”.

Why does the Texas SBOE give Pearson contracts to print GED material, all the STAARs, and then Texas allowed Pearson to purchase Texas online virtual education?

Pearson also supports TASA (Texas Association of School Administrators) who are working to implement common core into Texas schools. 

‘Backward transfer’ (also commonly referred to as ‘backward design’ or ‘planning backwards’) is part of the Understanding by Design® framework for curriculum, assessment, and learning created by Wiggins and co-author, Jay McTighe, also a designer of CSCOPE.

As explained here and here, the Coalition of Essential Schools (CES) is the progressive education reform movement behind both CSCOPE and Common Core. Grant Wiggins has worked with the Coalition of Essential Schools for many years, studying CES method and pedagogy, and incorporating them into the creation of his own curriculum and instruction design for use in CES schools. A staple of the CES reform model has long been the use of ’essential questions’ in identifying desired results of teacher instruction.

Stage one of Wiggins and McTighe’s backward design process is identifying essential questions.

In 2011 and 2012, the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) partnered with ASCD (the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) to hold statewide summits in several states on the implementation of Common Core. Wiggins and McTighe’s Understanding by Design® was originally published by ASCD. Texas Education Agency & UN Agenda 21

Agenda-21Our nation is sadly deteriorating and America’s Exceptionalism is wasting away in large part due to the indoctrination of our school children. Texas unfortunately has bought into the lie of the United Nation’s Agenda 21/sustainable development goals of eliminating world poverty.  Sounds great on the surface but in reality it is the removal of individual freedom and personal property.

The Texas Education Agency (TEA), Texas Education Service Center (TESC), Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA)  are all behind the implementation of the United Nations Goals in our school system.  The CSCOPE curriculum is the tool being used to implement Agenda 21 propaganda.

Wake up Parents and Taxpayers 

Please take time to find out  what danger this indoctrination will bring to our National Sovereignty and Freedom.

Our children’s and grandchildren’s lives are being changed–STOP THIS Indoctrination before it is too late. America  will forever be changed if citizens do not get involved in stopping this creeping cancer.

The common answer head is, “I am too busy.”  If you do not take time now you may rue the day that you did not slow down and protect our Freedom. Texas Superintendent goes to Washington DC?

 Dr. Jeff Turner, superintendent of Coppell ISD is on his way to Washington DC again. Why?  Turner flew to Washington on Dec. 5th to discuss Common Core Standards and non adoption of them in Texas.  Dr. Turner  is also President of the Texas Association of School AdministratorsTASA.   TASA is gearing up to attend the American Association of  School Administrtors, AASA to hear humanist Linda Darling Hammond who is associated with Communist William (Bill) Ayers  speak on the Common Core Standards. Hammond is also an education adviser to the Obama administration.  Why are  Texas Taxpayers funding this? Why are we having to pay for our superintendents to travel to here about the Marxist Common Core standards Texas did not adopt?

Dr. Turner seems to be all about promoting an education of the 21st Century. An education that is NOT based on individual achievement but on the collective. It is a watered down education that removes vocabulary, novels, cursive writing and the basics of algebra. Why are our administrators buying into this?

Though Common Core was not officially adopted in Texas the Education Service Centers have found a way to implement a similar product that has Common Core written all over it, called Cscope. Cscope is an online curriculum that nearly 80% of Texas school districts have purchased and implemented it without parents knowledge. The curriculum has not been available for parents to see and teachers had to sign a non-disclosure statement that they would not release the contents or say anything negative about it. Csocpe is pro Islamic and anti Christian. It pushes a global collectivist agenda. It is based on the Marxist/progressive ideology of Obama education adviser Linda Darling Hammond who is associated with communist Bill Ayers.  Hammond has been a regular speaker at Cscope Conferences.

 

Dr. Turner has also signed a contract for the Coppell ISD with TASA’S  School Transformation Network. Here is their Visioning Document. Notice following the document are the original 35 superintendents that promoted this vision.
